Although traditional Japanese tattoos and Japanese tattoo designs have become very popular in the United States and many Western countries, they always have a huge negative connotation in Japan. This is because, somewhere between 300 and 600 AD were used tattoos to mark criminals. It is no longer practiced today, but there are many reports of these early traditions of tattoo. This is changing, and that Japan becomes more modern, or "Westernized" many of these younger generations have discovered the deep traditions and hsitory tattooing in the county and more sporting their own tattoos and piercings. But for the largest percentage of the county and all over 30 years or so tattoos are still considered too low class or Yakuza (Japanese organized crime gangs).
